Shayne Skov Scouting Report

SHAYNE SKOV – LB – STANFORD

Shayne Skov

Strengths:

Hard-nosed player who makes a living between the tackles. Reads and reacts and is able to plug up running lanes. Not afraid to get physical and throw his body around. Shows the ability to use his hands to fight off blockers and make the play. Delivers a good pop as a hitter.

Weaknesses:

A stiff and linear athlete who struggles in space and when asked to change directions. Limited ability in coverage due to athletic limitations. Occasionally takes false steps and isn’t quick enough to make up for his bad positioning. A little slow to shed blocks at times and will miss plays. Lacks burst as a blitzer and is easily shook by agile quarterbacks. Needs to do a better job of wrapping up and will have a tough time tackling agile ball-carriers in space at the next level. Likely to be limited to 3-4 ILB duties due to his lack of range. Has previously torn his ACL.

Skills:
1-poor, 2-weak, 3-above average, 4-very good, 5-elite

Athleticism: 2.0
Instincts: 3.0
Point of Attack: 3.0
Coverage: 1.5
Pass Rush: 2.0
Tackling: 2.5
Intangibles: 2.5

Verdict: Meh

Shayne Skov was a good college player but his upside is limited at the next level because of his athletic limitations. He is at his best when he can play in the run and bang around bodies in the middle. He’ll likely be a 2-down linebacker, at least at the start of his career, and be limited to 3-4 schemes. A player with limitations like these should not be drafted high, but it doesn’t mean they can’t form a niche on a team.

Grade: 4th Round
