Ryan Shazier Scouting Report

RYAN SHAZIER – LB – OHIO STATE

Ryan Shazier

Strengths:

Great athlete with good size. Has an elite first step and burst. Displays sideline-to-sideline range. Does a good job of staying patient against the run and finding the ball-carrier. Flows down the line well and has the athleticism to elude blockers in space. A good tackler who drives his hips and delivers a pop with his hits. Has the athleticism to be a plus cover linebacker. Occasionally lines up with his hand on the ground to rush the passer. Is dangerous on blitzes due to his first step. Can line up at multiple spots across both 4-3 and 3-4 fronts.

Weaknesses:

Can be indecisive and takes too many false steps. Will routinely bite on play action fakes. Has difficulty shedding blocks and gets washed out too often against the run. Ends up on the ground a little more than you’d like. Still raw in coverage and looks uncomfortable covering down-field routes. Needs to do a better job of playing the ball rather than the man. Raw as a pass-rusher and often lacks control on his rushes.

Skills:
1-poor, 2-weak, 3-above average, 4-very good, 5-elite

Athleticism: 4.0
Instincts: 2.5
Point of Attack: 2.5
Coverage: 2.0
Pass Rush: 2.0
Tackling: 4.0
Intangibles: 3.0

Verdict: Meh

I’ve seen the Lavonte David comparison more than once and I think it’s off base. I had Lavonte David rated as a 1st rounder and was very impressed by his college tape. Shazier is much more raw than David and isn’t as quick. Regardless, Shazier does a lot of things right but he’s too raw for me to rate him highly. He needs work in coverage, needs to shed blocks better and he doesn’t strike me as an instinctual linebacker who has a good feel for things. He seems a step slow to react and it’s what sets guys like David apart. Shazier is likely to struggle early on but does have potential to develop into a quality starter.

Grade: 3rd Round
