Trent Murphy Scouting Report

TRENT MURPHY – DE – STANFORD

Trent Murphy

Strengths:

Tall with long arms. Flashes the ability to use his hands well. Is able to extend and keep lineman off his body. Does a good job of shedding against the run. Has a solid variety of pass-rush moves. Does a pretty good job of keeping his pads low despite his height. Has experience lining up at multiple positions and has rushed from both 2 and 3 point stances. Has experience dropping back into coverage as well.

Weaknesses:

A stiff and linear athlete who has limited upside as a pass-rusher. Sometimes looks like he’s moving in slow motion. Lacks flexibility around the edge. Doesn’t possess a great first step. Lacks strength throughout his lower body. Looks awkward and stiff in coverage and would struggle at linebacker in the pros.

Skills:
1-poor, 2-weak, 3-above average, 4-very good, 5-elite

Pass Rush: 2.5
Strength: 2.0
Quickness: 2.0
Point of Attack: 3.0
Tackling: 4.0
Intangibles: 2.5

Verdict: Meh

Trent Murphy is one of the most awkward defensive ends I’ve watched because it’s rare to see someone so tall and light play so much in a stand-up role. I think his upside as a pass-rusher is limited but I think there is some potential for him as a run defender. I like the way he extends and gets off blocks and he tackles well. However, he’s more of a mid-round pick than a borderline 1st rounder.

Grade: 4th Round
