Marcus Smith Scouting Report

MARCUS SMITH – LB – LOUISVILLE

Marcus Smith

Strengths:

Quick twitch athlete with a borderline elite first step. Can beat lineman right off the snap. Has great closing speed. Displays the speed necessary to win around the edge. Flashes a dirty spin move. Has experience rushing from all over the defensive line and from 2 and 3 point stances. Above average athlete who will get looks in the 3-4.

Weaknesses:

A bit linear and lacks the flexibility to bend around the edge. Routinely runs around the quarterback because of flexibility issues. Athletic but a bit tight hipped which will hurt his transition to linebacker. Lacks strength and his weak bull-rush is evidence of this. Doesn’t hold up well at the point of attack and also has a tendency to run himself out of plays. Needs to use his hands better to shed blocks and continue to increase his pass-rush arsenal as he’s mainly just a speed-rusher at the moment.

Skills:
1-poor, 2-weak, 3-above average, 4-very good, 5-elite

Athleticism: 4.0
Instincts: 2.5
Point of Attack: 2.0
Coverage: 2.0
Pass Rush: 3.5
Tackling: 3.0
Intangibles: 2.5

Verdict: Meh

Marcus Smith has a great first step and is an above average athlete for the position but his lack of lateral agility and flexibility hurts his overall potential. He will have to make the transition to linebacker because of his lack of strength but he’s tight hipped and it will hurt him in coverage. I think he has a spot as a situational pass-rusher but I have doubts he’ll ever develop into a great all-around player.

Grade: 3rd Round
