Khalil Mack Scouting Report

Khalil Mack

A well built prospect with great length and strength. Has rarely seen lateral agility for the position. Possesses a quick first step. Does an excellent job of turning speed into power. Shows great strength and has the ability to put lineman on skates. Shows good flexibility and a good dip move. Sets up lineman well with an inside-out move to gain an advantage. Has played in multiple fronts and can rush from a 2 or 3 point stance. Has experience dropping back in coverage and should make a smoother transition to 3-4 OLB than most prospects.

Plays well in small areas but not as great in space. Lacks straight-line speed and it’s evidenced by his lack of great closing speed. Only asked to cover short zones in coverage and won’t be comfortable further away from the line of scrimmage. Struggles to use his hands to shed blocks. Tries to spin off blocks and ends up making himself vulnerable. Needs to be more consistent with his pad level.

1-poor, 2-weak, 3-above average, 4-very good, 5-elite

Athleticism: 3.5
Instincts: 2.5
Point of Attack: 2.5
Coverage: 2.5
Pass Rush: 3.5
Tackling: 3.0
Intangibles: 3.0

Verdict: Meh

There’s a lot to like about Mack and in my opinion he’s the superior prospect to Barr. However, he’s a bit of a project himself. Although he is much further along with his pass-rush moves than Barr, he’ll still need some time to adjust to the speed of the NFL and work on his hand usage. I don’t envision him as an elite prospect but he’s worthy of a mid-late 1st round pick.

Grade: 1st Round
