Telvin Smith Scouting Report

TELVIN SMITH – LB – FLORIDA STATE

Telvin Smith

Strengths:

Tall and lengthy linebacker with great athleticism. Has an excellent first step. Displays sideline-to-sideline range. Aggressive against the run. Does a good job of filtering through traffic and avoiding blocks. Flashes violent hands to disengage blocks. Plays with more strength than his listed size would indicate. Has the athleticism to be an above average cover linebacker. Reads quarterbacks’ eyes well and knows his assignments. A great tackler who wraps up and rarely misses when he squares up. Good blitzer who has a lot of upside as a pass-rusher due to his length and first step. Offers some versatility. Excellent leader.

Weaknesses:

Undersized as he’s listed around 220 lbs. Can get washed out against the run at times and prefers to run around blocks as opposed to taking them head on. Will bite on play action fakes from time to time and get caught out of position. Has a tendency to over-run plays on the outside and miss the tackle. Would like to see him pursue a little bit better at times.

Skills:
1-poor, 2-weak, 3-above average, 4-very good, 5-elite

Athleticism: 3.5
Instincts: 3.0
Point of Attack: 3.0
Coverage: 3.5
Pass Rush: 2.5
Tackling: 4.0
Intangibles: 4.0

Verdict: Love him

Telvin Smith has a lot of upside due to his athleticism but the most impressive things to me are his aggressiveness and leadership qualities. Despite being smaller than most linebackers, he doesn’t play like it. I think he shows the ability to play with violent hands and can work on defeating blocks, which is probably his biggest weakness at the moment. I think he can be a starter in a 4-3 defense outside and I can see him having success in a 3-4 as well but he’d need further development.

Grade: 2nd Round
