Anthony Barr Scouting Report

ANTHONY BARR – OLB – UCLA

Anthony Barr

Strengths:

An athletic edge rusher with a quick first step. Has great size and length. Has some versatility but most likely suited to play OLB in a 3-4 defense. Has the athleticism to play in space. Flashes a quick spin move occasionally. Much more dangerous when playing standing up as his burst is noticeably better.

Weaknesses:

Raw. Has virtually no pass-rush moves outside of a spin move that doesn’t really get him anywhere. Relies simply on athleticism to generate pressure. Struggles mightily to shed blocks. Lacks strength at the point of attack and doesn’t play with heavy hands. Once a lineman latches on he rarely frees himself to make a play. Athleticism is very good, but not elite. Motor runs hot and cold. Misses a few too many tackles. Lacks elite flexibility off the edge. Can be effectively controlled in the run game. Will have to work on his coverage skills.

Skills:
1-poor, 2-weak, 3-above average, 4-very good, 5-elite

Athleticism: 4.0
Instincts: 2.5
Point of Attack: 2.0
Coverage: 1.5
Pass Rush: 2.0
Tackling: 2.5
Intangibles: 2.5

Verdict: Hate him

Probably the definition of a boom or bust prospect who I think is more likely to bust than boom. I’ve seen comparisons to Von Miller and they couldn’t be more inaccurate. Von Miller had an elite first step, one of the quickest I’ve seen in football. Barr, while a good athlete, is not elite in that sense. He’s so incredibly raw that he really does have a large amount of developing to do. Even prospects like Bruce Irvin and Andre Branch were further along as pass-rushers. His inconsistent effort and the fact that he’s not a relentless pass-rusher puts me off as well and I would pass on him.

Grade: 2nd Round
