Justin Gilbert Scouting Report

JUSTIN GILBERT – CB – OKLAHOMA STATE

Justin Gilbert

Strengths:

A prototypical build for a corner. Tall with good mass and long arms. An excellent athlete who possesses borderline elite speed. Recovers well due to his speed if initially beaten. Excellent ball skills. Turns his head to locate the football and does a good job of making the play at the highest point. Adds value as a kick returner.

Weaknesses:

High and tight in his backpedal and technique lets him down coming out breaks. Gets sloppy with his feet and wastes a lot of steps. Offers very little in terms of run support as he struggles to fight off blocks and is a weak tackler. Can be slow to recognize plays/routes at times and doesn’t always stick to his assignments. A little too finesse at times.

Skills:
1-poor, 2-weak, 3-above average, 4-very good, 5-elite

Athleticism: 4.5
Instincts: 2.5
Man Coverage: 2.5
Zone Coverage: 2.5
Run Support: 1.5
Ball Skills: 4.0
Intangibles: 2.5

Verdict: Love him

Justin Gilbert is very much a boom or bust prospect. He has all the athletic tools to become an elite corner and has impressive ball skills. His technique is too sloppy at the moment so he’ll likely have a rough transition in the NFL unless he cleans it up right away. A raw prospect who reminds me a little bit of Jimmy Smith coming out of Colorado. He had a few tough years at the start of his career but has developed into a great corner for the Ravens.

Grade: 1st Round
