Class: Senior
Projected:  4th-5th Round

2010 – 71 catches, 951 yards, 13.4 avg, 10 TD’s

2008 – 49 catches, 567 yards, 11.6 avg, 9 TD’s
2007 – 46 catches, 465 yards, 10.1 avg, 6 TD’s

Austin Pettis is a good mid-round receiver prospect that has great hands. He’ll go up and grab the ball almost anywhere you put it. He isn’t very fast though and he lacks and suddenness to his game. He’ll have trouble separating in the NFL and that would limit his production severely. He can develop into an average #2 receiver, but as of now I see him more as a 4th option and a redzone target.

Scouting Report:

– Great size
– Productive throughout his career
– Has big strong hands
– Able to pluck the ball away from his frame
– Physical and will work across the middle
– Does a good job of attacking the ball
– Can make the tough catch in traffic
– Adjusts well to poorly thrown passes
– Good redzone threat
– Able to use his size to his advantage as a blocker

– Numbers we’re inflated by a pass-happy system
– Lacks good straight line speed
– Will struggle to get separation
– Rounds off his routes and lacks burst out of his breaks
– Ability to challenge down field will be hindered by his lack of speed
– Has some lapses in concentration
– Drops balls because he doesn’t look the ball all the way in
– Not a threat after the catch
– Could still use work as a blocker

As far as PETTIS is concerned….. I wonder what grade Emmitt Smith (17th Pick in Rd 1—– how many of the guys picked before him have you heard of OR had GREAT CAREERS), Joe Monrtana (last pick in 3rd Rd), and the MANY other Draftees that were not GRADED HIGH by the experts, OR PICKED before hte POPULAR, HIGHER RATED players that made GFM’s and MEDIA eat their WORDS and that went on to be STARS in the NFL…… Since the Oklahoma / Fiesta Bowl win I’ve followed Boise (and their WR’s) and I like Young & Pettis. Young is going to get his shot, but It looks like Pettis will get the chance to make people EAT their words…….Hope some team is smart enough to give him a chance INSTEAD of an afterthought.

    • That’s your opinion and you’re certainly entitled to it. You, or anyone for that matter, could make that argument for any middle/late round prospect. I don’t have anything against him but I don’t see him ever becoming a star in the NFL. He can be a serviceable #2 WR for a team but I don’t think he’s a legit #2 receiver. Trust me, if I watch a prospect that I like, I’ll rank them high. It’s why I have guys like Ricky Stanzi and Vincent Brown higher than most.
