Overview:

Mallett enters his junior season with high expectations. People fall in love with measurable. He is huge, and has a rocket arm. When you watch him on tape however, you notice many flaws. His accuracy is average and I was not impressed with his ball placement most of the time. His footwork is spotty and he is easily flustered by blitzes or when he is pressured. He easily gets happy feet and starts to throw off balance and he gets out of rhythm. When he is out of rhythm, as he often is against his tougher opponents, his quality of passes go down. He misses easy targets because he doesn’t set his feet, he stares down his WR’s, and he forces throws. I am not impressed with him as a QB right now. However, he is still inexperienced and needs more time to mature as a passer. For his sake, I hope he doesn’t declare unless he fixes all of those areas. The reason he is ranked so high is because of his upside, and if it’s still the upside and not the skill that has him as a potential 1st round pick after his junior year, he better come back. I’m worried we will see another case of JaMarcus Russell, where scouts fall in love with his upside and his rocket arm.
